FlexX - The flexible Fire Extinguishing System

A fire containment & extinguishing system consisting of a heat-resistant protection barrier and a gaseous exinguishing appliance.

Description

FlexX consists of 2 components: 1)Firstly, a fireproof and heatresistant fabric like kevlar is set up around workplaces, stations or machinery, similar to a fence. This fabric will be stretched around small poles and that way the surrounded area can be designed in any prefered shape. At the bottom, this curtain is fixed to the floor and on top, the second component comes into play. 2) As a fire extinguishing unit, the top end of the fabric is connected to a pipeline. Through this pipeline CO2 is channeled originating from a cartridge or a tank. The gas will then jet from small outlets and will damp down the fire. For more information on the project and the solution, please read the attached document. This solution was created and developed in a team of 5 students and was part of an academic lecture.

References

FlexX is based on a recombination of existing fire fighting techniques and appliances: 1. The method of extinguishing fires with CO2 is currently used in regular handheld fire extinguishers and certain sprinkler systems. 2. Heat-resistant materials and barriers are used in special equipment and clothing.
