air quality sensor

using a swarm of commodity sensors for air quality monitoring, well known from the automotive industry

Description

"safe and protect life. and assets." central aspect of this task is to prevent fire and to exstinguish it. one way to prevent, is detecting the fire: a technical variant for that could is by "monitoring of gas". a concrete (low-cost) solution for this application is well known from the automotive industry: in cars are integrated small and modular solutions, which are supplied with embedded software for converting gas measurements into air quality measurements. this happens in terms of a tvoc(total volatile organic compounds)-measurement or equivalent co2-value. because of the applications including automotive systems, consumer devices and industrial equipment, there is a wide range of sensors available: different lifetimes, power consumptions, sensitivities can be bought for a good price. ( sidestep: this idea could be disruptive or frugal, by recycling systems from used cars and to convert these to an indoor, static solution.) * a network of sensors could generate advantages: sensoring at one spot is realize by wearing the sensors on the body. so the (moving) workers are a part of the detection-system. one more benefit could be, if a worker falls or get unconscious because of carbonmonoxide, his/her smartphone could warn the fire brigade. a second system based on an usb-stick which can be used to create a kind of swarm. this system uses every computer in the plant as a fire-detector via an usb-stick. if all sensors are connected, a network could be establish. the sensors could be able to learn, when a situation is escalating. this should lead to a 100% reliability. * future: air quality is a general matter. the ratio of oxygen is relevant for the performance of workers. the same sensors could be integrated in an (installed/existing) air conditioning system. in that case the sensors have a 24/7/365-function: they help to keep workers healthy or on a high performance level. because of detecting co2 or co they can warn if the air in the hangar isn“t fresh anymore. so the swarm of sensors is able to detect a upcoming fire and they help to keep workers healthy.
